South Shore Road, Guemes Island - Draft Signing and Striping Plan

South Shore Road is located along the southern shoreline of Guemes Island, atop an active feeder bluff and has eroded to the point that the structurally integrity of the road is threatened. In an attempt to preserve the road, Skagit County designated the road as one-way in November of 2008, completely eliminating vehicular traffic from the southern lane. However, the southern lane is still utilized as a non-motorized lane for bicyclists and pedestrians. Recently, a geotechnical report was performed which identifies the vulnerable areas, as well as, the strong areas along the bluff edge. With this information, Skagit County Public Works has developed a draft signing and striping plan to return South Shore Road to two-way operation while still protecting the vulnerable erosion sites and maintaining driver safety.

If you would like to comment on the draft plan, please submit e-mails to traffic@co.skagit.wa.us or contact Ann Marie Gutwein, or Torey Nelson at (360) 416-1400.
