Skagit River Marblemount Bridge Project (PDF Project Info HERE)Upcoming Bridge Closures Bridge Closure Announcement Flyer Please be advised, the Marblemount bridge will be closed overnight, Monday evening through Friday morning, 8pm - 4am, from June 1st - 19th to facilitate repair work. With the road washout over Jordan Creek on Rockport Cascade Road, the closure of the Marblemount bridge means visitors and residents east of the bridge will be cut off from accessing State Route 20. First responders will still be able to access this area if an emergency occurs during the closures. The bridge will be reopened to traffic during the day between closures. If you would like to be added to an email list for project and closure updates, please email Jenn Rogers, jrogers@co.skagit.wa.us Background Skagit County Public Works contracted with Stellar J Corporation in the spring of 2025 to complete a repair and maintenance overhaul project for the Marblemount bridge. The bridge is over 90 years old and is currently under a weight restriction and limited to one lane traffic. The bridge has a failing paint system, corrosion to truss elements and gusset plates, pack rust in many connections in the steel floor system, missing fasteners, leaking joints, and delaminated patches in the bridge deck. The maintenance project will extend the life of the bridge, return the structure to two lane traffic, and remove the load posting, while preserving its historical importance in the area. Project Funding The $18.5M project was fully funded through the 2022 Federal Highway Administration Local Bridge Program Selection, allocated via the Washington State Department of Transportation. The County was not required to provide any matching funds for the project. March 2026 Update The Marblemount bridge rehabilitation project was intended to span two construction seasons in 2025 and 2026, and the original construction sequencing plans allowed the contractor to close the bridge for a period of time during both seasons. When the Marblemount bridge is closed, the only available detour route east of the bridge is Rockport Cascade Road. Because of the bridge washout over Jordan Creek, Rockport Cascade Road cannot be used as a detour route during closures. The contractor had originally planned to have 15 days of intermittent, day-time closures, and one continuous 15-day closure during the construction season this summer. In order to minimize the impact of these bridge closures, the County will be requiring the contractor to conduct the 15 intermittent closures at night from 8pm - 4pm, Monday night through Friday morning. Additionally, to avoid the 15-day continuous closure, the contractor has agreed to conduct the planned deck resurfacing activities without fully closing the bridge to traffic. Public Works staff are working on a plan with local emergency responders, including the Skagit County Sheriff and regional fire agency, to ensure first responders would still have adequate access during the night-time closures.
