Welcome to Skagit County
December 23, 2025 Skagit County Commissioners to Interview County Commissioner District 3 CandidatesSkagit County Commissioner Lisa Janicki has announced her retirement effective January 2, 2026. Commissioner Janicki’s current term representing District 3 ends on December 31, 2026. With the decision to retire before the end of her elected term, a nomination process was conducted by the Skagit County Democrats to replace Commissioner Janicki. The candidate ultimately nominated to the vacant seat will serve until the November general election results are certified. The District 3 commissioner seat will be on the ballot November 2026 and the newly elected commissioner will take office as soon as the election results are certified. The replacement of a vacant county commissioner position is outlined in RCW 36.32, which states if there is one vacancy on the Board of County Commissioners, then the remaining two commissioners shall fill the vacancy. The Skagit County Democrats announced the nomination of three candidates for consideration by Commissioner Browning and Commissioner Wesen. Commissioner Browning and Commissioner Wesen are scheduled to interview all candidates for the vacant District 3 seat on Monday, January 5, 2026, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room at 1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon. The public is welcome to join the interviews in-person. The interviews will also be broadcast on TV21 and available to watch via Zoom at the link on the Commissioners’ website. After the interviews have concluded, the Commissioners will meet in a private executive session from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. to discuss the qualifications of each candidate. At approximately 3:30 p.m., the Commissioners will publicly reconvene in the Hearing Room to potentially vote on the nomination of one candidate to the District 3 seat. The Commissioners may also decide to defer the final vote to a later date. According to RCW 36.32, the Commissioners have 60 days after the vacancy begins to vote for a new commissioner. If a decision is not made within 60 days, the Governor then has 30 days to nominate a candidate for the vacant seat. Questions about the interviews or nomination process can be sent to the Commissioners’ office at commissioners@co.skagit.wa.us or (360) 416-1300. |
