Skagit County Commissioners Schedule Public Meeting to Discuss Senior Nutrition Contract

The Skagit Board of County Commissioners hosted a work session today with Public Health staff to discuss the budget that includes funding for local senior centers and the senior nutrition program. As stated in a press release on September 9, 2025, the County Commissioners requested Public Health staff to present options for reducing the budget, including evaluation of either reducing hot congregate meals and hot meal deliveries or transitioning the senior nutrition program contract to a nonprofit.

In order to reduce the operating budget for senior services and the senior nutrition program, Public Health has recommended to the Commissioners to make no changes to the operation of senior centers, but to notify Northwest Regional Council that Skagit County intends to transition the senior nutrition contract to a new community provider starting July 1, 2026. Public Health presented the operational and budgetary impacts of either reducing hot congregate meals and hot meal deliveries or transitioning to a new provider, and staff stated that a transition to a new provider would be the more ideal option to ensure the highest number of meals possible be offered to seniors.

The County Commissioners have scheduled a public meeting on Monday, September 29th, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., to further discuss the recommendation to transition to a new provider and make a final decision on providing official notice to Northwest Regional Council. The public is welcome to join the meeting in-person in the Commissioners’ hearing room at 1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon, or via Zoom at the link on the Commissioners’ webpage below.
