ANDERSON, JANICKI TESTIFY IN SUPPORT OF DNR TIMBER HARVESTING POLICIES

Washington Environmental Council lawsuit threatens local revenue for schools, roads and hospitals, says Anderson

SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County Commissioner Ted Anderson and Sedro-Woolley School Board Director Mike Janicki traveled to Olympia this Monday to testify before the Washington Board of Natural Resources, supporting the Washington State Department of Natural Resources' timber harvesting policies.

According to Anderson, a lawsuit brought by the Washington Environmental Council against DNR is an attempt to force acceptance of policies left over from the previous administration. "We feel these policies were illegal then and now, and would cause a definite impact on DNR's ability to generate revenue. The lawsuit calls for halting all timber sales and the sustained yield project until a SEPA review is conducted," said Anderson.

Anderson stated that if the DNR timber harvest is shut down, Skagit County would be forced to absorb critical revenue losses. In fiscal years 1999, 2002, 2001 and 2002 to date, Skagit County has received $11,422,067.00 as a result of DNR timber harvests. "The loss of this revenue would create undue hardship on schools, hospitals, cities, county government and other county entities," said Anderson.
