Commissioners finalize Lydig as jail contractor

MOUNT VERNON – Skagit County Commissioners officially started the clock ticking today on construction of a new 400-bed jail with a unanimous vote to affirm Lydig Construction as contractor with a bid of $41.8 million.

The Tuesday afternoon vote came in the wake of an August 25 bid opening at which five competitive bids were received. Lydig was apparent low bidder at that time, and the Bellevue company’s bid elements were subsequently reviewed and verified. The motion to approve the bid selection was made by Commissioner Lisa Janicki and seconded by Commissioner Ron Wesen. The motion was passed 3-0.

Commissioners commended Project Manager Marc Estvold, Sheriff Will Reichardt, Corrections Chief Charlie Wend and a large group of project partners and staff. Dahlstedt noted that planning for a new jail began more than 15 years ago.

Estvold reiterated his excitement about a bid that came in about $1 million under estimates. He reported a tentative jail opening date of about June 2017.
