Skagit County Medic One Presents Distracted Driving Presentation May 23 at Burlington Public Library

Skagit County Medic One, Safe Kids Skagit-Island and the Children’s Museum of Skagit County will host a distracted driving presentation at the Burlington Public Library, 820 E. Washington Ave., at 11 a.m., Friday, May 23. The presentation will coincide with National EMS Week.

What chances do you or your teen take when driving a vehicle? Texting and cell phones, eating, changing music station and putting on makeup while driving dramatically increases the odds of a crash. Drivers every day can spot at least someone behind the wheel who is not paying attention.

Joel Feldman, a trial attorney who speaks with End Distracted Driving Student Initiatives (www.enddd.org), will speak about distracted driving and what you can do to stop it. Feldman’s 21-year-old daughter, Casey, was killed in 2009 after distracted driver ran a stop sign and crashed into her car. Similar incidents have taken place in Skagit County.

Skagit County Medic One is continuing to recognize National EMS Week by offering this presentation. Medic One will honor area EMS personnel with a spaghetti dinner at Burlington Fire Department at 5 to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, May 21. Medic One will recognize at the dinner several providers and instructors as well as a local citizen for outstanding service.

The Skagit County Board of Commission will kick off National EMS Week with a proclamation at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 19, in the Commissioners Hearing Room, 1800 Continental Place, in Mount Vernon.

National Emergency Medical Services Week, May 18-24, brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's first responders. The 2014 National EMS Week theme is “Dedicated: For Life.” Emergency medical service agencies around the country have recognized National EMS week since 1974.
