County continues on-site appraisals in school district

MOUNT VERNON – Skagit County Assessor Dave Thomas reports that about 10 weeks remain for assessors to complete external physical inspections of all 13,000 properties in the Mount Vernon School District.

By law, assessors must complete a physical inspection of properties once each six years. Skagit County is broken into six valuation areas, one of which incorporates the boundary of the Mount Vernon School District.

“This notification is to confirm to home and business owners that our assessors are busy in the district, where they have been conducting on-site appraisals since fall,” said Thomas. “We will knock on doors during the course of our revaluation process, but our site inspection is external only.”

Appraisals are a component used in the calculation of annual property taxes. In the five years between on-site visits, annual valuation adjustments are made based on market sales in the area. In July the Assessor’s Office will start a county-wide valuation of new construction properties.
