Skagit named one of top 10 healthiest counties in Washington state

New data released today shows that Skagit County is the 9th healthiest county in Washington state. The top-10 ranking is an improvement from 2016, when the county was ranked 13th.

"We know that good health is influenced by more factors than just medical care," said Jennifer Johnson, Skagit County Public Health Director. "The food we eat, the quality of our education, and the cleanliness of our air and water all play a part in our personal health and community health. These are all factors we can influence."

Skagit County has prioritized the opioid epidemic as one key way to improve community health. A recently completed needs assessment and countywide action plan will help the county, medical providers and community organizations improve health outcomes for local residents.

As a result of the new community health rankings, and the Population Health Trust Community Assessment, the county intends to work with community partners to focus on child and maternal health in 2017, with the goal of improving health outcomes countywide.

In Washington, San Juan County is ranked as the healthiest county, while Garfield County is ranked as least healthy.
