Community Rating System upgrade with National Flood Insurance program saves rate payers $700,000 annually

Skagit County ranked in top 1 percent of nation for FEMA’s Community Rating System for floodplain management

SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County was recently upgraded to a “4” rating by FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS), a program that encourages communities to engage in flood plain management activities that exceed minimum standards. Only one percent of communities across the nation are ranked as high as Skagit County.

The new ranking saves flood insurance policy holders in unincorporated Skagit County more than $700,000 per year. In Skagit County 2,808 property owners have flood insurance policies with an average premium of $668 per year. The new rating will produce an average annual savings per policy holder of $253.

“Many different Skagit County departments are involved in supporting CRS activities,” said Skagit County CRS Coordinator Delores McLeod.

McLeod was recognized by the Skagit County Commissioners for her efforts and dedication for coordinating the process. In 2006, Skagit County, under McLeod’s direction improved their CRS rating from a six to a five.

“Flooding is a serious life-threatening issue in Skagit County. We appreciate our staff’s hard work in building flood awareness and also in saving residents hundreds of thousands of dollars on flood insurance,” said Skagit County Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt.
