Skagit County Receives Grant to Support Recycling Efforts
Proposal one of 82 chosen from over 1,700 applications in national program to promote and support community recycling

SKAGIT COUNTY - Recycling in Skagit County will get a boost this summer with the increased availability of portable recycling bins for public events. Skagit County announced today that it was selected as a recipient of a 2010 Recycling Bin Grant from the national nonprofit organization Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company.

Chosen from over 1,700 applicants, the grant will support the purchase of 30 additional ClearStream portable recycling bins which will be used to help make recycling at public events mainstream and commonplace.

As directed by its Climate Action Plan, Skagit County recently launched a "Zero-Waste Events" program that offers recycle bins, certification, and technical assistance to event organizers countywide, and is intended to make comprehensive event recycling socially expected. "This grant will allow Skagit County to offer the use of recycling, composting, and trash bins, free of charge, at both public and private events, including large events like the Anacortes Arts Festival and the County Fair," Skagit County Sustainability Administrator Ryan Walters stated. "By offering three-bin waste stations at local events, our hope is that the public will always have access to the appropriate disposal bin which will in turn significantly decrease the amount of trash accumulated at local events," Skagit County Recycling Educator Callie Martin said. More information on the Zero-Waste Events program is available at www.skagitcounty.net/zwe.

Keep America Beautiful's Bin Grant Program provides recycling bins directly to recipients and leverages the purchasing power and recycling expertise of KAB. Since its inception in the fall of 2007, the Bin Grant program has placed more than 1,100 recycling bins in 225 communities in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Further information about the grant program is available at www.bingrant.org.
