Board of Health considering ordinance to restrict smoking and vaping in public places
Smoking and vaping is a community health concern. The Skagit County Public Health department makes it a priority to protect and improve the health of all county residents - including access to clean air. The intent of this ordinance is to reduce access and exposure to smoking and vaping for children and youth, as well as promote a healthier environment for all residents.
Public Health staff presented an ordinance to the Skagit County Board of Health on March 12, 2019, and is now seeking public comment on the proposal. A public hearing is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019. The entire proposed ordinance can be found online at www.skagitcounty.net/health. Written comments can be submitted through April 9, 2019 online at www.skagitcounty.net/health, or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Comments can also be mailed/delivered to: 700 South Second Street, Mount Vernon, WA 98273-1071.
“Smoking and vape-free policies are one of the most effective tools for protecting the health of a community,” said Jennifer Johnson, Skagit County Public Health Director. “Not only do they protect non-smokers and non-vapers from secondhand exposure, such policies can also be effective in reducing access and use by youth.”
The proposed Smoking and Vaping in Public Places ordinance would ensure smoke and vape free environments in indoor public places, indoor places of employment, and outdoor public places where children congregate. Currently, Skagit County Public Health has not formally adopted the WA State Smoking in Public Places Law, which has been in effect statewide since 2005, nor taken actions to restrict vaping in public places that are allowed under the WA State Vapor Products Law.
