Celebrate new Burlington Northern Overpass on Jan. 23

A celebration of the completion of the new Burlington Northern Overpass Project is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the project site, off Belleville Road, on the north side of the new bridge.

Local and regional elected officials will join the Skagit County Board of Commissioners and Public Works staff to officially cut the ribbon on the new bridge. The overpass reopened to traffic on Nov. 30, 2018, after 18 months of demolition and construction.

“This bridge is a key part of our regional transportation system,” said Dan Berentson, Public Works Director. “We couldn’t have been successful without the support from our local and regional partners, and the patience of our community during construction.”

The new three-span prestressed concrete bridge, with wide shoulders and a sidewalk, replaces the original 1,183-foot-long timber trestle bridge built in 1936.  The project was made possible through funding by the Bridge Replacement Advisory Committee (BRAC) Highway Bridge Program (HBP), Connecting Washington - Washington State Legislature, Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board (FMSIB), the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe Grant Funding, and the Skagit County Economic Development Funds.
