The Skagit County Natural Hazards Mitigation plan is being updated in accordance with federal requirements. The plan benefits unincorporated Skagit County and the municipalities of Anacortes, Burlington, Concrete, Hamilton, La Conner, Lyman, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley as well as the Samish Indian Nation, the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, and the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe.

WHAT IS MITIGATION? Mitigation is the development and implementation of strategies and actions to eliminate or reduce the degree of long term risk to human life, property and the environment caused by natural hazards within our community.

WHY DO WE NEED A MITIGATION PLAN? Mitigation planning establishes community priorities and action steps before a disaster to help save lives and reduce property damage. Having a mitigation plan places communities in a better position to obtain federal post-disaster mitigation funding.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND? Receiving input from local citizens, business owners, industry and other community stakeholders in an essential component of the mitigation planning process. A series of public meetings will be held through-out the plan update process. All meetings will be held at 7:00 pm at the Burlington City Council Chambers, 833 Spruce Street. Meeting notices will be published in the Skagit Valley Herald.
