PUBLIC MEETING
Skagit County Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan
7:00 pm, Wednesday, March 12, 2014
Burlington City Council Chambers
833 Spruce Street

The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public and to receive comments regarding the Skagit County Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan. The meeting will be informal. Discussion will focus on the natural hazards that affect Skagit County and the problems that may result from these hazards.

The Skagit County Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan is being updated in accordance with federal requirements. The plan benefits unincorporated Skagit County and the municipalities of Anacortes, Burlington, Concrete, Hamilton, La Conner, Lyman, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley as well as the Samish Indian Nation, the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community and the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe.

WHAT IS MITIGATION? Mitigation is the development and implementation of strategies and actions to eliminate or reduce the degree of long-term risk to human life, property and the environment caused by hazards within our community.

WHY DO WE NEED A MITIGATION PLAN? Mitigation planning establishes community priorities and action steps before a disaster to help save lives and reduce property damage. Having a mitigation plan places communities in a better position to obtain federal post-disaster mitigation funding.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND? Receiving input from local citizens, business owners, industry and other community stakeholders is an essential component of the mitigation planning process. A series of public meetings will be held throughout the plan-update process. All meetings will be held at the Burlington City Council Chambers, 833 Spruce Street. Meeting notices will be published in the Skagit Valley Herald. In addition, information about these meetings will be posted at www.skagitcounty.net
